  About us

Musiconnect is a dynamic European organisation that encourages and promotes intercultural music and artistic collaborations and exchanges. Of particular interest are transnational artistic cooperations that, apart from linking the various music cultures of member states of the European Union, also integrate other countries whose active participation and input help to create and promote a more diverse and global intercultural dialogue.

Based in Malta, at a cross road that reaches out towards Europe, North Africa and all the countries encompassed in the Mediterranean basin, Musiconnect is strategically located to create a healthy creative dialogue and cultural networking system. It seeks to act as a strong linking point not only amongst Mediterranean and European music cultures, but also to integrate other countries from around the globe to promote the exposition of different kinds of traditional music, and to help in fusing music ideas to create innovative forms with the intention of presenting contemporary performances.

Renzo Spiteri (Malta) & Mercan Dede (Turkey)

Musiconnect collaborates closely with multi-percussionist Renzo Spiteri, an accomplished solo artiste and session musician, who throughout the years has been committed to using the universal language of music to bring different cultures together. He participates extensively in cross-cultural music exchanges and collaborations that have resulted in performances with various artistes from Europe, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and North America including Trilok Gurtu (India), Joji Hirota (Japan), Mercan Dede (Turkey), N’faly Kouyaté (Rep. of Guinea), Mousse Ndaiye (Senegal), Yelemba D’Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Nitin Shankar (India). The successful outcome of these ambitious music exchanges has not only enriched his music vocabulary and cultural sensitivity but also strengthened his belief in these types of exchanges.

Renzo's interest in modern technology and its use in collaborative projects has resulted in the presentation of contemporary performances that bind traditional elements from diverse cultural backgrounds.

He has worked with contemporary music composers Michael Alcorn and Pedro Rebelo from the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen’s University, Belfast (N. Ireland). He also works very closely with Contact Dance Company (Malta), writing contemporary music and performing live on stage with the company across Europe, and collaborates with installation artist Vince Briffa, with one of their projects, entitled "Re: Public", being selected as closing events program for Cork 2005 - European Cultural Capital 2005.

Renzo is internationally endorsed by Toca Percussion, Paiste Cymbals and Gibraltar Hardware.

His official website is available at www.renzospiteri.com.
